Drumlane win IFC opener

Drumlane defeat Ballymachugh to set-up crunch championship clash with Knockbride this Saturday.
Drumlane 1-10
Ballymachugh 0-7

Drumlane got their intermediate championship campaign off to a winning start on Friday evening last when they had six points to spare over Ballymachugh at Crowe Park, Lacken.

After a dour first-half, which saw them trail 0-5 to 0-4 at the interval, Ollie Fay’s charges lifted their game after the turn over and stormed into the lead with points from midfielders Barry Corrigan and Dane O’Dowd.

A goal from Fergal Brady in the 40th minute proved the catalyst for victory, as the new-look full-forward latched onto a long ball into the square from substitute Daryl McConnell and buried the ball past Patrick Baxter in the Ballymachugh goal.

Points from JP Kelly and ‘Man of the Match’ Glen Fitzpatrick – operating at centre-back – ushered the west Cavan side into a six-point lead, which would have been extended to nine had John O’Dowd’s brave run all the way from full-back ended up in the back of the net instead of being turned around the post by a brilliant save from Baxter.

Drumlane now play Knockbride this Saturday, July 31, in a crunch game in Group One at Kingspan Breffni Park (throw-in 6.30pm), where the winners will virtually secure their passage through to the quarter-finals before having to play Drung and Ballymachugh in their last games, respectively.
