The Farmers First Purchasing Group was formed at a meeting held in Drumlane Community Resource Centre on Monday 6th February 2006. It is an organisation of 42 members who farm in the general areas of Milltown, Belturbet, Butlersbridge, Redhills, Killeshandra, Cornafean, Crosskeys, and Crosserlough. Approximately fifty percent of the members are involved in dairy farming with the remainder concentrating on suckling, dry stock and sheep
The group are currently involved in the purchase of Meal, Fertilizer, Animal Medicine, Farm Plastic, Insurance and Banking services. Significant savings have been made by many members over the last two years as a result of deals negotiated with a range of different suppliers of farm inputs and services. there has been an average saving per member of 2000 euro per annum since the formation of the group .
The Group have also carried out some training for members on farm safety and there are plans for more training courses to be held in the Resource Centre in September 2008. The group are currently researching ideas for alternative farm enterprises and further ways of reducing costs at farm level. We would be interested in hearing from other groups or individuals who may have ideas or projects that they wish to develop.
